In Uganda, nearly half of all children never complete primary school. This July, we’re changing what’s possible — one child at a time.
MEET KATHY'S KINDERGARTEN
In the heart of Mayuge, Uganda, there is a small school with a big promise.
Since 2018, Kathy’s Kindergarten has been opening its doors to children aged 3–6 — giving them a safe place to learn, to play, and to grow during the years that matter most. In a region where access to education is far from guaranteed, what happens inside those walls can shape the entire course of a child’s life.
The school was named in memory of Kathy Smedley, our late co-founder, who believed with everything she had that every child deserves a chance. That belief is still alive in every child who walks through the door.
Why it matters
48% of children in Uganda never complete primary school. (UNESCO, 2024)
For children in rural communities like Mayuge, the barriers are enormous — poverty, distance, a lack of early learning provision. Without a strong foundation in those first few years, the odds are already stacked against them.
Kathy’s Kindergarten exists to change those odds and give children a foundation to enter primary school. But to keep going, and to reach more children, people need to know it exists.
