Light in the Midst of Darkness
Blinded due to an illness during her childhood yet with poor parents, Fazira grew up in a world that always seemed filled with darkness, with little hope for a brighter future. Her situation became even more difficult when, at the age of 17, she was raped by someone who eloped and has never supported her since. As a result, she gave birth to a son, yet she had no source of income and could barely provide for herself and her child.
Act4Africa is committed to transforming communities through care and holistic education while giving vulnerable girls and young women hope for a better future.
Through this mission, Fazira was given an opportunity to acquire vocational skills in making snacks such as samosas, mandazi, chapati, and cakes that could easily be sold and consumed within her community. This became her source of livelihood and enabled her to begin saving through a Youth Savings and Loans Association known as Tulibamukisa YSLA in Macheche village.
However, because of her visual impairment, Fazira often faced exploitation from customers who would take extra mandazi or pay her less money, knowing she could not see them. In response, Act4Africa visited Fazira’s family with the aim of mobilising greater support for
her business and restoring hope to both Fazira and her family.
During the visit, essential items such as bedding and food supplies were provided to improve the living conditions of Fazira and her son and ensure they could live a more decent life. A shared meal with the family further strengthened the sense of love, care, and belonging.

By the end of the visit, hope had been restored. Fazira’s potential was recognised, and her family members were encouraged and empowered to support her as she continued striving for a better future. There is evidence that the well-being of Fazira, her son and the entire family improved as a result of such a remarkable visit.
